Dr. Byoung Yoon Kim
Founder and Chairman of the Board
A recognized expert in fiber optics with more than 25 years of experience in research and development, Dr. Kim brings a variety of leadership and technical expertise to the company. Prior to founding Novera Optics, he founded and managed FiberPro, a successful global test and measurement company. Dr. Kim taught at Stanford University and at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) where he served as chairman of physics department.

Dr. Kim is a Fellow of the IEEE, Optical Society of America, and Institute of Physics (UK), and a member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. He also served as a governor of IEEE LEOS (Lasers and Electro-Optics Society), and published more than 200 technical papers and holds more than 40 patents. Dr. Kim received a B.S. from Seoul National University, a M.S. from KAIST, both in Physics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University.

John Barton
Director
John Barton joined Novera Optics as the CEO in September 2007. He brings with him 20 years of experience in the optical communications industry. Most recently, he was Vice President and General Manager of Flextronics Photonics, the hybrid microelectronics packaging division of Flextronics. Previously, during his tenure with Flextronics, he acted in a variety of executive roles including VP-GM of North America Design and sponsored several ODM design initiatives within the CTO organization. Prior to Flextronics, Barton was President and CEO of Wave Optics, a optical component and sub-component designer and manufacturer. Wave Optics was a Silicon Valley start-up which grew, entirely self-funded, from 2 to over 400 people prior to being acquired by Flextronics in 2001.

Mr. Barton holds BS degrees in Physics and Mathematics from the University of California at Irvine.

Robert W. Conn
Director
Robert W. Conn is a Managing Director at Enterprise Partners. Prior to joining Enterprise Partners in 2002, Bob was the Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California San Diego from 1994 to 2002 where he led the Jacobs School through an unprecedented period of growth.

Bob co-founded Plasma & Materials Technologies, a venture backed company spun out of UCLA that had a successful IPO in 1995. He served as board chairman and chief technologist until 1994.

Bob is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and over the years has received numerous awards including the E. O. Lawrence Memorial Award, presented on behalf of the President of the U.S., the Curtis W. McGraw Research Award of the American Assoc. of Engineering Education, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the California Institute of Technology.

Bob has served on numerous advisory committees for the Federal Government, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and others, including the Energy Subcommittee of the President Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology, the Department of Energy’s Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Physics Division Advisory Committee. Bob received his B.S. in chemical engineering and physics from Pratt Institute and his M.S. and Ph.D. in engineering science and applied physics from the California Institute of Technology.

Donald R. Scifres
Director
Don Scifres is the co-founder of SDL Ventures, LLC, a venture capital firm focused on emerging technology companies. Prior to SDL Ventures, Scifres was at Xerox Palo Alto Research Center where he became Manager of Optoelectronics and a Xerox Research Fellow. In 1983, Scifres co-founded SDL, Inc. where he was CEO until 2001 when SDL, Inc. was sold to JDS Uniphase. Under Scifres' direction, SDL became one of the top 25 listed companies in NASDAQ in terms of market cap.

Scifres has been awarded over 140 US patents, has published over 300 technical articles and has won a number of awards including the Land Medal, the Rank Prize, The Tyndall Award and the Noyce Medal. Scifres is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Emeric J. McDonald
Director
Emeric McDonald is the founder of Octane Capital Management, an investment management firm focused on investing in emerging technology companies. Prior to Octane, Emeric was the Director of Private Equity Research at Amerindo Investment Advisors and Co-Portfolio Manager of the Amerindo Technology Fund (ATCHX). While at Amerindo, he led investments in 25 private companies, which resulted in 14 IPOs. Prior to Amerindo, Emeric worked at Robertson Stephens Investment Management. Emeric's experience includes management, technical and consulting roles at various companies including Synopsys, Hewlett-Packard and Intuit. He holds a B.A. in Computer Science from Dartmouth College and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
