Dr. Byoung Yoon Kim
Founder and Chairman of the Board
A recognized expert in fiber optics with more than 25 years of experience in research and development, Dr. Kim brings a variety of leadership and technical expertise to the company. Prior to founding Novera Optics, he founded and managed FiberPro, a successful global test and measurement company. Dr. Kim taught at Stanford University and at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) where he served as chairman of physics department.
Dr. Kim is a Fellow of the IEEE, Optical Society of America, and Institute of Physics (UK), and a member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology. He also served as a governor of IEEE LEOS (Lasers and Electro-Optics Society), and published more than 200 technical papers and holds more than 40 patents. Dr. Kim received a B.S. from Seoul National University, a M.S. from KAIST, both in Physics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Stanford University.
Richard M. Moley
Director
Dick is the founding venture partner of Storm Ventures. He was born and raised in England where he received a B.S.E.E. from Manchester University. He worked as an electrical engineer and software developer for a U.K. computer company and a U.S. company on the East Coast before coming to California in 1966. He earned his M.S.E.E. and M.B.A. from Stanford University. Between 1966 and 1973, he worked at Hewlett-Packard and held various positions in Software Development and Marketing. In 1973, he joined ROLM Corporation to lead their diversification into the telecommunications business. He held the position of Group Vice President before the company was acquired by IBM in 1984. After staying with IBM a year and a half, he left to join a start-up, StrataCom, Inc.
As Chairman, CEO and President of StrataCom Inc., he pioneered ATM and Frame Relay technology. In 1996, the company was acquired by Cisco Systems. He remained as a Senior Vice President and Board Member of Cisco until August 1997 when he resigned to become a private investor. He currently serves on the board for such companies as Linear Technology, Inc., CMC Industries, Inc., CIDCO Inc., Echelon Inc., Netro Inc., and Nefeour Systems, Inc. He is also on the Board of Trustees for Santa Clara University.
Bill Stensrud
Director
Bill is Managing Director and General Partner of Enterprise Partners. Bill's career in the computer, communication, software and services industries includes founding and/or serving as the Chief Executive Officer of three successful high technology companies. Bill began his career on the technical side at AT&T, but he quickly expanded his experience base through positions in marketing, sales and senior management. As President and Chief Executive Officer of the Enterprise Partners II portfolio company, Primary Access, Enterprise Partners came to know Bill as an industry leader with an impressive knack for identifying the growing markets in networking and telecommunication equipment and services.
As an individual investor, prior to joining Enterprise Partners in January 1997, Bill served as an advisor to a number of venture and LBO investment firms and made several significant personal investments each of which grew into a successful public company: Juniper Networks (NASDAQ: JNPR), Paradyne Corporation (NASDAQ: PDYN) and GlobeSpan Corporation (NASDAQ: GSPN). Since joining Enterprise Partners four years ago, three of Bill's portfolio companies have gone public: Rhythms NetConnections (NASDAQ: RTHM), which he founded; Packeteer (NASDAQ: PKTR); and iAsiaWorks (NASDAQ:IAWK). Bill also sold both IPivot and XLNT, two additional Enterprise Partners portfolio companies to Intel. These investments returned $669 million to the Enterprise Partner's limited partners for a return multiple of 38. This has allowed Bill to establish himself as an innovator, a leader and an industry visionary. He recently ranked number 15 on the Forbes list of "Movers and Shakers in Venture Capital." Tough to do with only four years in the business! Bill has responsibility for seven Enterprise Partners portfolio companies.
John Walecka
Director
John Walecka is a founding partner of Redpoint Ventures. Prior to founding Redpoint, John was a general partner with Brentwood Venture Capital, a firm he joined in 1984. John currently focuses on core infrastructure and application areas in the enterprise as well as broadband Internet. John is involved in major system companies such as: Optimight Communications, Polaris Networks, Rapid5 Networks, Novera Optics and Syndeo Corporation. He is also working with enabling semiconductor products companies including Multilink Technology, Internet Machines, ASIP, and Entropic Communications.
John has also been involved in a number of very successful companies in the enterprise and broadband infrastructure space. Key investments in the communications products area include: Xylan (acquired by Alcatel), Wellfleet Communications (merged into Bay Networks), Synernetics (acquired by 3Com), Agile Networks (acquired by Lucent), Network Equipment Technologies (NETX), Polycom (PLCM), Onstream (acquired by 3Com), Avici Networks (AVCI), TransMedia Communications (acquired by Cisco), Lightera Networks (acquired by Ciena), Promatory Communications (acquired by Nortel), Netro (NTRO), and StratumOne (acquired by Cisco). John has also actively worked with many of the leading software infrastructure companies, including Sybase (SYBS), Documentum (DCTM), Object Design (ODIS) and Vitria Technology (VITR).
John served as Director of the Western Association of Venture Capitalists (WAVC) and is currently a Director of the Stanford Business School Venture Capital Trust. Prior to joining Brentwood, John worked at Hewlett Packard and the Stanford University Smart Product Design Laboratory. John received a B.S. and an M.S. in Engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
