KT to Spend 3 Billion Won Building FTTH in Gwangju
Tuesday,February 21, 2006 By Kim Han-sik
South Cheolla Province Headquarters of KT said on Feb. 20 that it would inject 3 billion won into building fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure adopting wavelength division multiplication passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) for some 2,000 household users in 6 newly-built apartments in Gwangju including Lotte Nakcheon.
The headquarters formed a deal with the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in October last year to build FTTH network and roll out fiber service, and now plans to complete the setup by late this month before the launch set for April this year.
The FTTH network co-developed by KT and Novera Optics Korea is capable of providing stable broadcasting-communication convergence service including IPTV, HDTV and education-on-demand at 100Mbps speeds.
KT successfully conducted the world's first WDM-PON based FTTH test service for some 100 household users in Gwangju in January this year.
"We plan to promote adoption of leading-edge IT infrastructure in Gwangju, historic city known for the 1980s democratization movement," said Kim Young-kwon, head of KT South Cheolla Province. "We will build optical infrastructure used for future growth-engine businesses such as WiBro and IP Media."
