To support IP-based HDTV video services, guaranteed bandwidths in excess of several tens of Mb/s will be required to each subscriber. Since a HDTV channel needs about 20 Mb/s and the future access infrastructure should be able to support about 3 HDTV channels/home, a bandwidth in excess of 60 Mb/s is required just to provide future video services. With the addition of telephony, internet surfing, and real-time gaming the access network should be able to support up to a dedicated 100 Mb/s connectivity per household. To address these future requirements, Novera has developed a WDM-PON FTTH solution that supports a dedicated and symmetric 100 Mb/s connection to each home at an affordable cost.
FTTH using DWDM-PON architecture
As illustrated in the figure above, Novera's FTTH system consists of an optical line terminal (OLT) in the central office (CO), a single-mode fiber optic distribution network including a passive remote node (RN), and optical network terminals (ONT) at the home locations. The OLT in combination with a network equipment manufacturer's gigabit ethernet switch can provide connectivity to either the metro core network or to local servers for HDTV video-on-demand, voice-over-IP, education-on-demand, and many other services. The ONT can be a platform for a home gateway that provides a HDTV set-top function, wireless LAN connectivity, ubiquitous home automation, and other future functions. Bidirectional transmission is used to save on both feeder and access fiber costs. The optical (DE)MUX for the passive remote node is typically located in the manhole near the subscriber area.
