WDM-PON: The ultimate access and transport platform

With the proliferation of bandwidth hungry applications, existing access networks are unable to keep up with the ever-increasing end user demand for higher bandwidth. WDM Passive Optical Networks provide an open platform, to offer an elegant and future proof architecture for access networks that enables service providers to deliver a quadruple play of voice, data, video and wireless services. Novera Optics Inc. has developed and introduced an end to end WDM platform which satisfies this market segment and provides a future proof solution under the consideration of the following key features.

  • Identical (color-free) ONT/ONUs
  • High reliability and cost efficiency due to passive elements and the use of a physical PON infrastructure in the field
  • High security and privacy because of dedicated optical PtP connectivity (Point to Point connectivity)
  • Bit-rate independency
  • Protocol transparency
  • Service mix capabilities because of service independency
  • Graceful bandwidth upgrades of every individual connection on the PON
  • Easiness of OSP (Outside Plant) fault monitoring

WDM-PON systems, in contrast to TDM-PONs, allocate a pair of dedicated wavelengths to each subscriber, enabling the delivery of symmetric 100 Mbits/sec or more of dedicated bandwidth to each subscriber or optical network unit (ONU) Moreover, WDM-PONs are protocol and bit-rate independent, supporting the transmission of any service or service mix, including Gigabit Ethernet, ESCON, FICON, Fiber Channel, OC-n, ATM, and FDDI, at any bit rate.

In the near-term, WDM-PON complements emerging broadband access technologies such as xDSL, HFC, and LMDS, rather than competing against them, by allowing for shorter access drops and higher bandwidth connections. WDM-PON provides a low-cost, high-bandwidth, fault-tolerant solution for carriers interested in delivering revenue-generating broadband services. It is a future proof technology that offers the best solution for the next-generation, broadband access.

Passive Optical Networks are network topologies that enable the network operators to efficiently provide FTTx services to their customers. The point to multi-point topology of PONs enables the service provider to amortize the cost of equipment and facilities over a large number of subscribers and share one optical fiber among multiple buildings or homes. The adoption of PON based FTTx deployment is on the rise across the world. The Asia markets characterized by high fiber penetration, high broadband take rates, and high population densities are moving quickly towards FTTx deployment through PON. Regulatory changes in the US and competitive pressures in Europe are also paving the way for PON based access networks. Nevertheless, existing TDM PONs have limitations because of the bandwidth sharing (bottleneck problem) on the feeder cable. WDM-PON solves this bandwidth limitation by providing dedicated wavelengths to each end point of the PON.

To date, over 150K commercial lines have been deployed in South Korea using Novera's wavelength-locked WDM-PON breakthrough technology. Each ONT/ONU is interchangeable which reduces management, installation and inventory cost.
